Control the primal and mysterious force of magnetism at the flip of a switch! Did you know it’s possible to build a magnet with some pretty ordinary non-magnetic materials. Join us to discover how to build your very own electrically powered magnet (electromagnet) that can be turned on and off at will.
Permanent magnets are fun, but after this workshop, you’ll learn how to build a magnet you can control, and even how to make a stronger one later! Engineers use electromagnets to control their strength, switch them on/off, and change direction of pull/push (polarity). They are used in everything from sorting materials in recycling centers, digitizing sound in speakers/headphones and microphones, powering motors in tools and appliances, and even in high-tech, clean-energy transportation like mag-lev trains.

How did ancient Egyptians engineer the Great Pyramid of Giza? The monumental pyramid and final resting place of Pharoah Khufu (Cheops) was built in 2400~ BCE and the only Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. In this Ancient Tech Maker's Day session, we will learn with an archaeologist about the construction of the Great pyramid, building materials, and explore academic theories and engineering behind ramps which enabled the pyramid to reach such heights and stability. Then we will hold a friendly competition on which team can make the highest, largest, and most stable pyramid using spaghetti, marshmallows and toothpicks!
